Scientists Finally Prove High Fructose Corn Syrup Risks | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn

For the last several years, getting good answers about the health risks of high fructose corn syrup has been difficult. There has been a lack of true scientific substantiation on either side of the debate.

Although many of us suspected this stuff really isn't healthy for us, we didn't actually know how it was affecting our bodies.

Well, a team of Princeton researchers has now released their official findings on a high fructose corn syrup study with (not so) shocking conclusions.

The Princeton researchers had been studying not only side effects of high fructose corn syrup, but how your body reacts when it's ingested. They discovered that rats which had access to high fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to basic table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same.

Over the past 27 years the complete time frame that the data has been available there have been 0 deaths as a result of vitamins and over 3 million deaths related to prescription drug use. In fact, going back 54 years there have only been 11 claims of vitamin-related death, all of which provided no substantial evidence to link vitamins to the cause of death. The news comes after a recent statistically analysis found that pharmaceutical drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in the US.

FDA Cracks Down on Over 500 Cold and Allergy Drugs

The food and drug administration (FDA) announced on March 2, 2010 that they would be pulling over 500 prescription cold and cough medications from the market. These drugs have not been evaluated by the FDA and therefore are not deemed “safe” for consumption.

Each dose of a drug builds up the toxicity level in the body. With toxins arguably being at the top of the list for causing disease and illness, it is no mystery as to the connection between an astronomical increase in drug consumption and sickness.

Psychiatrist: Company hid Prozac, suicide link
By Marilyn Elias, USA TODAY

Lives were threatened and Americans treated like "guinea pigs" because Eli Lilly & Co. officials lied 15 years ago in denying there was any evidence the anti-depressant Prozac could cause suicidal behavior, a Harvard psychiatrist has charged.

A Man Ahead of His Time

Imagine a man who at age 22, was a master of Greek, Latin, English, Italian, Hebrew, Syriac, Arabic, Spanish, German, & some Chaldaic.

Translated 9400 pages of science text in 29 years. Published more than 2200 printed pages, which included translations, original works & essays, completed 10 volumes on clinical trials, published 70 original works on chemistry & medicine, four 1500 page repertories & numerous articles

He translated 17 medical, chemistry and scientific books from the English, 6 from the French, 1 from the Italian, and 1 from the Latin, totaling over 9400 pages of text in 29 years, which amounts to 324 pages per year, or approximately 1 page every day for 29 years.

His four volume set entitled 'The Pharmaceutical Lexicon', was one of the standard pharmaceutical reference works of his day.

In his day he was a highly respected Medical Practitioner, Scientist and Chemist. He was spoken of as "this celebrated chemist," "One whom chemistry has to thank for many important discoveries."

The leading physician of the day, Dr.Hufeland, spoke of him as "one of the most distinguished physicians of Germany, a physician of mature experience and reflections."

His publications were described as "no ordinary work, but written with an unusual degree of knowledge, reflection and original thought." His wine test first appeared in van Sande's 'Signs of The Purity and Adulterations of Drugs', of which he wrote the greater part of the essay. His wine test was greatly praised in chemical and scientific journals and Trommsdorff's Journal of Pharmacy stated that 'ignorance of his Wine Test was damning evidence of the incompetence of many apothecaries.'

Does he sound like a highly intelligent individual, someone few could compete with, even to this very day?

This same highly gifted (probably one of the most intelligient people ever to have walked this planet, in the same league as Nikola Tesla) super intelligent man went on to publish a work so profoundly different from current thinking that no average medical scientist could understand it, even to this day. That single publication led to him having been ousted, as every other super intelligent scientist in history. So profound was that publication that it changed the course of medicine forever.

First comprehensive paper on statins' adverse effects released
Provides evidence for reported side effects including muscle and cognitive problems

A paper co-authored by Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and director of UC San Diego's Statin Study group cites nearly 900 studies on the adverse effects of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins), a class of drugs widely used to treat high cholesterol.

The result is a review paper, currently published in the on-line edition of American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs, that provides the most complete picture to date of reported side effects of statins, showing the state of evidence for each. The paper also helps explain why certain individuals have an increased risk for such adverse effects.

"Muscle problems are the best known of statin drugs' adverse side effects," said Golomb. "But cognitive problems and peripheral neuropathy, or pain or numbness in the extremities like fingers and toes, are also widely reported." A spectrum of other problems, ranging from blood glucose elevations to tendon problems, can also occur as side effects from statins.

The paper cites clear evidence that higher statin doses or more powerful statins - those with a stronger ability to lower cholesterol - as well as certain genetic conditions, are linked to greater risk of developing side effects.

"Physician awareness of such side effects is reportedly low," Golomb said. "Being vigilant for adverse effects in their patients is necessary in order for doctors to provide informed treatment decisions and improved patient care."

The paper also summarizes powerful evidence that statin-induced injury to the function of the body's energy-producing cells, called mitochondria, underlies many of the adverse effects that occur to patients taking statin drugs.
