The issue attracted media attention again recently, following the appointment in 2012 of the new Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, who supports the availability of homeopathic cures through the NHS. Due to the high degree of controversy surrounding its use and regulation, a number of studies have been undertaken which seek, in one way or another, to understand why people use these kinds of treatments. Where studies have been based on sample surveys of the general population, attention has focused on measures of reported use over some reference period. Reported use can then be specified as the outcome in a regression analysis, with demographic and attitudinal predictors introduced to enable inferences about the factors associated with CAM uptake. While this approach has resulted in a number of useful insights, it is problematic to assume that people who report having used CAMs in the past necessarily believe them to be efficacious (that is, better than a placebo) now. Conversely, the fact that an individual does not report having used a CAM in the past cannot be taken as indicating that she believes them to be inefficacious. As a consequence, our understanding of the factors which underpin support and opposition to CAM may be distorted through an exclusive focus on reported use. In this research, funded by the Wellcome Trust, we investigated the correspondence between reported use and the perceived efficacy of a particularly prominent and controversial treatment - homeopathy.

HIV infection rates among pregnant women increase in four South African provinces
Surveillance data shows an increasing rate of HIV infections among pregnant women in Mpumalanga, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said on Monday.
Releasing the annual 2011 national antenatal sentinel HIV and syphilis prevalence survey in Pretoria, Motsoaledi said Mpumalanga had shown an increase in estimated HIV prevalence of two percent.
The province had a 34.7 percent prevalence rate in 2009 and the figure has since risen to 36.7 percent, according to the survey compiled by the department of health.
Other increases in prevalence rates were recorded in the Free State, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The analysis also permits conclusions to be made about the age of substances in the water – they can float in the ocean for several thousand years!

Canadian Researchers Discover New Evidence That Vitamin D Shuts Down Cancer Cells

Researchers at McGill University have discovered a molecular basis for the cancerpreventive effects of vitamin D, whereby its active form essentially shuts down cancer cells.
People with higher blood levels of vitamin D live significantly longer than people who have low blood levels of the vitamin.
The team, led by McGill professors John White and David Goltzman, of the Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Physiology, discovered that the active form of vitamin D acts by several mechanisms to inhibit both the production and function of the protein cMYC. cMYC drives cell division and is active at elevated levels in more than half of all cancers. Their results are published in the latest edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dangers of mixing grapefruit with drugs rises
The number of drugs when mixed with grapefruit that can lead to serious health problems, including sudden death, has skyrocketed, warns a Canadian researcher who first discovered the toxic link.
In an article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, David Bailey, a scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute in London, Ontario, said more than 85 drugs, many of them highly prescribed for common medical conditions, are known to interact with the pink fruit.
He first made the link 20 years ago.
But the number of medications with the potential to interact with grapefruit and cause serious adverse health effects has jumped from 17 to 43 in the last four years, as new drugs have been rolled out, Bailey said.

By 2010, South Africa was already spending R1.2 billion on vaccine procurement every year but child vaccination rates remained low – lower than those of Malawi, a country with 8% of South Africa’s per capita income.
Recently, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) South Africa questioned the current system in South Africa at the inaugural International African Vaccinology Conference in Cape Town.
For MSF South Africa and others concerned about immunisation, the facts are clear: young South African children are not receiving basic immunisations. Meanwhile, South Africa is overpaying for these vaccines while under-spending on programme support.

Physicians: Birth control should be sold without a prescription
(CNN) -- In the future, women may be able to buy birth control pills alongside ibuprofen and cough drops if the recommendation of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is adopted.
The group is recommending that oral contraceptives be sold over the counter without a prescription in an effort to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies in the United States.
Approximately 50% of all pregnancies are unplanned, a rate that hasn't changed much in the past 20 years, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reproductive health research. Women in their 20s are most at risk.

Heart attacks more common among the unemployed
People who have recently lost their jobs are more likely to suffer a heart attack than their employed peers, in some cases running a risk as high as 35%, according to a US study.

Dr Hamer was persecuted and jailed for perhaps curing more people of cancer than anybody else in human history, his work lives on.
Dr Hamer had an exceptionally high success rate with his cancer therapy, by far the highest I have seen of any therapy. During one of several trials of the persecuted Dr Hamer the public prosecutor (Wiener-Neustadt in Austria) had to admit that after 4 to 5 years 6,000 out of 6,500 patients with mostly advanced cancer were still alive. This guide dedicated to the memory of Misha, who died at the hands of criminals who poisoned him on the 8th of August, 2011, at the age of 14 months.

The research I was doing for this document was tested when the same criminals returned a month later to complete a job interrupted. Thankfully, we were able to save Ludwig, the Blood Hound, without any complications.
I sincerely hope that this guide will help others save their dogs when the unthinkable happens.

He was attacked by the medical establishment for connecting diet with disease and mental health in his 1917 book Dietetics. Dr. Clymer received his medical degree in 1902 from the College of Medicine and Surgery in Chicago and began practicing Osteopathy. Accusations of fraud surround Dr. Clymer’s career, including this 1923 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association which claims that, “Our records fail to show that this man was ever regularly graduated by any reputable medical college.” What Clymer had to say more than likely had something to do with the denouncement that he received from the medical establishment.
