Biltong - Jerky and Food Safety
Jerky and Food Safety
When raw meat or poultry is dehydrated at home — either in a warm oven or a food dehydrator — to make jerky which will be stored on the shelf, pathogenic bacteria are likely to survive the dry heat of a warm oven and especially the 130 to 140 °F of a food dehydrator. Included here is the scientific background behind drying food to make it safe and the safest procedure to follow when making homemade jerky.
See also the links to related articles at the end of this page.
What is jerky?
This product is a nutrient-dense meat that has been made lightweight by drying. A pound of meat or poultry weighs about four ounces after being made into jerky. Because most of the moisture is removed, it is shelf stable — can be stored without refrigeration — making it a handy food for backpackers and others who don't have access to refrigerators.
Jerky is a food known at least since ancient Egypt. Humans made jerky from animal meat that was too big to eat all at once, such as bear, buffalo, or whales. North American Indians mixed ground dried meat with dried fruit or suet to make "pemmican." "Biltong" is dried meat or game used in many African countries. Our word "jerky" came from the Spanish word "charque."
Pesticides and Parkinson's: UCLA researchers uncover further proof of a link
Study suggests potential new target in fight against debilitating disease
For several years, neurologists at UCLA have been building a case that a link exists between pesticides and Parkinson's disease. To date, paraquat, maneb and ziram — common chemicals sprayed in California's Central Valley and elsewhere — have been tied to increases in the disease, not only among farmworkers but in individuals who simply lived or worked near fields and likely inhaled drifting particles.
Now, UCLA researchers have discovered a link between Parkinson's and another pesticide, benomyl, whose toxicological effects still linger some 10 years after the chemical was banned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Even more significantly, the research suggests that the damaging series of events set in motion by benomyl may also occur in people with Parkinson's disease who were never exposed to the pesticide, according to Jeff Bronstein, senior author of the study and a professor of neurology at UCLA, and his colleagues.

Proof: Breast cancer cells can revert to normal without drugs
When a woman has breast cancer, you often hear she is "battling" and "fighting" the disease and that the goal is to kill the malignant cells - by chemicals and radiation - and slice them out of the body with surgery. But there may be another way to rid the body of breast cancer. The key? Help cancerous cells revert back into normal cells.
It's not a totally new idea. After all, as NaturalNews previously covered, a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that some breast cancers are apparently healed naturally by the body. The researchers concluded certain breast malignancies would have likely spontaneously regressed if they had never been discovered on a mammogram and treated.
Now there's evidence from scientists at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory that malignant mammary cells can be guided back into a normal growth pattern without using chemicals or drugs.

Weight loss - The Process of Fat Utilization
The Process of Fat Utilization
As you go about working towards your fat loss goals, it might come in useful to gain an understanding of how body fat is burned as you continually lose weight.
There are three main nutrients that you take in through your diet, proteins which break down into amino acids, carbohydrates which break down into glucose, and then dietary fats, which break down into triglycerides and free fatty acids.
When you're consuming enough energy and macronutrients in your diet, your body will happily use glucose as its primary fuel source as this is the fuel source that it prefers to use.
When not enough glucose is present because you are reducing your carbohydrate intake and therefore don't have this glucose in the blood stream, then the body will begin to turn to the breakdown of fats in order to sustain its energy needs.
Let's have a look at what this breakdown process entails so that you can get a clear idea of what lipolysis is all about.

The most important thing to note here is that the powerful anti-inflammatory properties of cannabis are available when it is consumed raw and unheated. Burning or heating cannabis converts THC acid (THCa) into THC, which has psychoactive effects.

Complementary Medicine Increasingly Popular Across Europe
Surveys conducted in several European countries have shown a high demand for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), as an increasing number of citizens seek relief for disorders they feel cannot be treated with conventional therapy. As many as half of those surveyed said they used alternative healthcare for their needs. The European Commission estimates that spending on CAM by consumers now tops EUR 100 million.
There are currently more than 150,000 registered medical doctors with additional CAM certification. But when it comes to advice on CAM, it was found in countries such as Ireland, Israel, Norway, Turkey and the United Kingdom that citizens sought the opinions of their social network of friends and family, rather than professionals, for advice.
Information sharing through social networks is seen as an important element of CAM use, particularly as a result of citizens’ personal experience, which seems to influence initial and repeated use of alternative medicine. This was the finding from studies in nine European countries. The trend of attitudes to CAM being shaped by personal experience was also observed for biomedical professions and students of such professions.

Semen makes you happy and lose weight
A study has found that woman who are directly exposed to semen on a regular basis are less depressed.
New Scientist reports the researchers think this is because mood-altering hormones in semen are absorbed through the vagina.
They say they have ruled out other explanations.
But wait there's more. An abstract for the study conducted at State University of New York says, for females who did not use condoms, depression scores went up as the amount of time since their last sexual encounter increased.
It says: "These data are consistent with the possibility that semen may antagonize depressive symptoms and evidence which shows that the vagina absorbs a number of components of semen that can be detected in the bloodstream within a few hours of administration."
But don't give up on safe sex. New Scientist quotes study leader Gordon Gallup as saying, 'I want to make it clear that we are not advocating that people abstain from using condoms'
'Clearly an unwanted pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease would more than offset any advantageous psychological effects of semen.'

Japanese man reaches world record age for males
Tokyo - 28 December 2012
A Japanese man reached the world record age of 115 years and 253 days on Friday, the Guinness Book of Records said.
Jirouemon Kimura, of Kyotango city, near Kyoto, was born on April 19, 1897, and is “only the third man in history to be 115 years old”, Guinness said.
Kimura's life across three centuries has spanned “immense social and technological advances including the advent of motor vehicles, television, the internet and 6 UK monarchs, 5 emperors of Japan and 20 US presidents,” it said.
Kimura has 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
He owes his longevity to his motto “eat light to live long”, the statement quoted him as saying.
Kimura worked at a local post office for 38 years. He turned to farming after his retirement and continued until the age of 90.
The Guinness record organisation postponed its presentation of Kimura's certificate because he has been recently hospitalised, the Kyodo News agency said, citing city officials.
The previous male record holder was Thomas Peter Thorvald Kristian Ferdinand 'Christian' Mortensen in the United States, who lived to 115 years and 252 days.
The oldest person ever to have lived is Jeanne Calment of France, who lived to 122 years and 164 days and died in 1997.

Severe vitamin D deficiency independently associated with in-hospital cardiovascular mortality
(NaturalNews) Severe vitamin D deficiency influences heart health: study
Mainstream medicine has promoted the merits of vitamin D's bone health and rickets prevention for decades. For that level of health protection, a low RDA (recommended dietary allowance) was established of 600 iu (international units) daily while a vitamin D blood level at 20 ng/ml (nanograms/milliliter) was considered normal.
Now most real vitamin D experts agree that the minimum 25(OH)D serum level for optimum health and immunity from disease should start at 50 ng/ml. With these recent discoveries, many are taking four to ten thousand iu of vitamin D3 supplements daily, unless they're under the sun relatively bare-skinned and often.
A few courageous heart specialist MDs are breaking through the cholesterol smoke screen scam asserting that arterial inflammation is the root of all cardiovascular issues and heart disease (http://www.naturalnews.com).
A lot of this inflammation is the result of poor diets. But vitamin D also provides a measure of protection against inflammation of all types (http://www.naturalnews.com).
With the link of inflammation to heart disease, it's no wonder that recent studies are pointing to increased heart disease mortality among those vitamin D deficient.

Nine foods you should never eat again
(NaturalNews) With so much misinformation out there about food and how it affects human health, making healthy food choices for you and your family can be difficult and confusing. There are a number of specific foods; however, that you will want to avoid in almost every circumstance because they provide virtually no health benefits while posing plenty of health risks. Here are nine foods you should never eat again if you care about preserving your long-term health:
1) White bread, refined flours. By definition, white bread and refined flours in general are toxic for your body because they have been stripped of virtually all vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other important nutrients. Because of this, the body does not know how to properly digest and assimilate these so-called foods, which can lead to health problems. Refined white flour has also been bleached with chlorine and brominated with bromide, two poisonous chemicals that have been linked to causing thyroid and organ damage. Face paints poison danger warning by trading standards
Children's face paints containing dangerous levels of lead are on sale in shops, trading standards officials have warned.
Tests found Tarton Collection Kits, imported from China, contained lead, which can damage the nervous system.
Salford-based Chelford Limited, which imported the paints, was ordered by magistrates to pay more than £14,000 for breaching product safety laws.
Only 300 of the 7,200 kits sold on to shops in the UK have been recovered.
A second batch of 7,200 kits, which each contain stencils and five pots of paints, was ordered by Chelford Limited, but was intercepted by Salford trading standards officials.

Mammograms nothing but a dangerous unethical money-making scam
Shock study: Mammograms a medical hoax, over one million American women maimed by unnecessary 'treatment' for cancer they never had
NaturalNews
Mammography is a cruel medical hoax. As I have described here on Natural News many times, the primary purpose of mammography is not to "save" women from cancer, but to recruit women into false positives that scare them into expensive, toxic treatments like chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
The "dirty little secret" of the cancer industry is that the very same oncologists who scare women into falsely believing they have breast cancer are also the ones pocketing huge profits from selling those women chemotherapy drugs. The conflicts of interest and abandonment of ethics across the cancer industry is breathtaking.
Now, a new scientific study has confirmed exactly what I've been warning readers about for years: most women "diagnosed" with breast cancer via mammography never had a cancer problem to begin with!
93% of "early detection" has no benefit to the patient.

Scientists fight superbugs naturally with copper
BY ADONAI
HEALTH, STUDIES & RESEARCH
Contact with copper can prevent bacteria from exchanging genetic material and even kill them, making it a potent resource in the fight against the spread of drug-resistant superbugs, according to a study conducted at the University of Southampton, England and published in the journal mBio.
Bacteria possess an ability known as horizontal gene transfer (HGT), which allows entirely unrelated species to exchange genetic material with each other. Researchers say this ability is responsible for much of the spread of antibiotic-resistant disease in recent decades.

How Homeopathic Medicines Work: Nanopharmacology At Its Best
By Dana Ullman
It is commonly assumed that homeopathic medicines are composed of extremely small doses of medicinal substances. And yet, does anyone refer to an atomic bomb as an extremely small dose of a bomb? In actual fact, there is a power, a very real power, in having atoms smash against each other.
Homeopathic medicines are made through a specific pharmacological process of dilution and vigorous shaking. However, when skeptics say that there is nothing but water in homeopathic medicine, they are proving their ignorance, despite the incredible arrogance in which they make these assertions. Dr. Martin Chaplin, a respected British professor who is one of the world's experts on water, has verified that "homeopathic water" and "regular water" are not the same, and his review of almost 2,000 references to the scientific literature on water (!) confirm this fact (Chaplin, 2009).

Majority support for homeopathy in Britain?
Article by Paul Stoneman and Patrick Sturgis from the NCRM Hub, University of Southampton. This article also appears in the Winter 2012 issue of the MethodsNews newsletter (opens a .pdf file).
The appropriate place for Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) in modern healthcare continues to emerge as a source of controversy in policy debates.
The issue attracted media attention again recently, following the appointment in 2012 of the new Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, who supports the availability of homeopathic cures through the NHS. Due to the high degree of controversy surrounding its use and regulation, a number of studies have been undertaken which seek, in one way or another, to understand why people use these kinds of treatments. Where studies have been based on sample surveys of the general population, attention has focused on measures of reported use over some reference period. Reported use can then be specified as the outcome in a regression analysis, with demographic and attitudinal predictors introduced to enable inferences about the factors associated with CAM uptake. While this approach has resulted in a number of useful insights, it is problematic to assume that people who report having used CAMs in the past necessarily believe them to be efficacious (that is, better than a placebo) now. Conversely, the fact that an individual does not report having used a CAM in the past cannot be taken as indicating that she believes them to be inefficacious. As a consequence, our understanding of the factors which underpin support and opposition to CAM may be distorted through an exclusive focus on reported use. In this research, funded by the Wellcome Trust, we investigated the correspondence between reported use and the perceived efficacy of a particularly prominent and controversial treatment - homeopathy.

HIV infection rates among pregnant women increase in four South African provinces
Surveillance data shows an increasing rate of HIV infections among pregnant women in Mpumalanga, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said on Monday.
Releasing the annual 2011 national antenatal sentinel HIV and syphilis prevalence survey in Pretoria, Motsoaledi said Mpumalanga had shown an increase in estimated HIV prevalence of two percent.
The province had a 34.7 percent prevalence rate in 2009 and the figure has since risen to 36.7 percent, according to the survey compiled by the department of health.
Other increases in prevalence rates were recorded in the Free State, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Incredible! Water Remembers What Swims In It For Thousands Of Years
Water does not forget, says Prof. Boris Koch, a chemist at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association. Irrespective of what happens in the sea: whether the sun shines, algae bloom or a school of dolphins swims through a marine area – everything and everyone leaves biomolecular tracks. With the help of a combination of new techniques, Boris Koch and colleagues can now identify and retrace some of these. In a special volume of the open access journal Biogeosciences, these scientists report on how these analyses work and which events in the sea have so far been uncovered by researchers.
Researchers working with Prof. Dr. Boris Koch, travelling on the Polarstern research ship, took water samples containing dissolved organic matter or DOM from the sea. The subsequent analysis in the mass spectrometer generates a chemical fingerprint which indicates the origin of the organic substances. Do they original from land plants or marine organisms, or did they enter the ocean via dust in the air or along springs on the sea bed? The analysis also permits conclusions to be made about the age of substances in the water – they can float in the ocean for several thousand years!

The analysis also permits conclusions to be made about the age of substances in the water – they can float in the ocean for several thousand years!
Vitamin D cuts cavities in half
by: Sherry Baker, Health Sciences Editor

(NaturalNews) With less time spent outdoors and the constant use of sunscreen by many, vitamin D levels are decreasing in many populations. Meanwhile, the number of cavities in children's teeth has gone up. Is there a connection? A new review of multiple studies of dental caries, or tooth decay, and vitamin D indicates the answer is yes. In fact, studies of kids in many countries link vitamin D intake to a whopping 50 percent reduction in cavities.

Yet another study suggests sperm numbers are falling in rich countries

AS HEALTH scares go, the idea that sperm counts are plummeting across the industrialised world, probably as a result of chemical pollution that has an adverse hormonal effect, takes some beating. In 1992 a meta-analysis of 61 papers, published in the British Medical Journal, suggested they had fallen by half in the preceding half-century, from 113m per millilitre of semen to 66m. Since then, the decline has apparently continued. The most recent paper, just published in Human Reproduction, by Joëlle le Moal, Matthieu Rolland and their colleagues at France’s Institute for Public Health Surveillance, is also one of the most comprehensive yet.

Canadian Researchers Discover New Evidence That Vitamin D Shuts Down Cancer Cells
By Mae Chan - preventdisease.com
Researchers at McGill University have discovered a molecular basis for the cancerpreventive effects of vitamin D, whereby its active form essentially shuts down cancer cells.
People with higher blood levels of vitamin D live significantly longer than people who have low blood levels of the vitamin.
The team, led by McGill professors John White and David Goltzman, of the Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Physiology, discovered that the active form of vitamin D acts by several mechanisms to inhibit both the production and function of the protein cMYC. cMYC drives cell division and is active at elevated levels in more than half of all cancers. Their results are published in the latest edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Spain study confirms hemp oil cures cancer without side effects
The International Medical Veritas Association (IMVA) is putting hemp oil on its cancer protocol. It is a prioritized protocol list whose top five items are magnesium chloride, iodine, selenium, Alpha Lipoic Acid and sodium bicarbonate. It makes perfect sense to drop hemp oil right into the middle of this nutritional crossfire of anti cancer medicines, which are all available without prescription.

Hemp oil has long been recognised as one of the most versatile and beneficial substances known to man. Derived from hemp seeds (a member of the achene family of fruits) it has been regarded as a superfood due to its high essential fatty acid content and the unique ratio of omega3 to omega6 and gamma linolenic acid (GLA) – 2:5:1. Hemp oil, is known to contain up to 5% of pure GLA, a much higher concentration than any other plant, even higher than spirulina. For thousands of years, the hemp plant has been used in elixirs and medicinal teas because of its healing properties and now medical science is zeroing in on the properties of its active substances.

Dangers of mixing grapefruit with drugs rises
The number of drugs when mixed with grapefruit that can lead to serious health problems, including sudden death, has skyrocketed, warns a Canadian researcher who first discovered the toxic link.
In an article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, David Bailey, a scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute in London, Ontario, said more than 85 drugs, many of them highly prescribed for common medical conditions, are known to interact with the pink fruit.
He first made the link 20 years ago.
But the number of medications with the potential to interact with grapefruit and cause serious adverse health effects has jumped from 17 to 43 in the last four years, as new drugs have been rolled out, Bailey said.

Babol, Iran (LifeNews.com) – Researchers in Iran have published the results of a new study showing women who have an abortion face a 193% increased risk of breast cancer. On the other hand, women who carry a pregnancy to term find a lowered breast cancer risk compared with women who have never been pregnant.
The study follows on the heels of new reports indicating Komen for the Cure gave $7.5 million to the Planned Parenthood abortion business in 2009.
The findings were reported in the April 3, 2010 issue of Medical Oncology but are coming to the public’s attention only now.

Aspartame-Cancer Link Exposed: Increasing Your Cancer Risk
by Elizabeth Renter
There have been several studies over the years that established a link between aspartame consumption and cancer risk. But, these studies were frequently criticized as being too small, only capturing a short period of time, and otherwise not living up to strict scientific standards. A new study, however, addresses these concerns and substantiates what the previous ones already said: that aspartame in diet soda can increase your risk of certain types of cancer, exponentially. It seems the aspartame-cancer link has been exposed…again.

The Aspartame-Cancer Link
Scientists looked at data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for a period of 22 years, including over 77,000 female study subjects and nearly 48,000 males. In all, the giant study looked at “2,278,396 person-years of data”, the most of all previous aspartame studies.Friday, 23 November 2012
4D scans show foetuses yawn in the womb
Growing into a fully formed human being is a long process, and scientists have found that unborn babies not only hiccup, swallow and stretch in the womb, they also yawn

Researchers who studied 4D scans of 15 healthy foetuses also said they think yawning is a developmental process which could potentially give doctors a new way to check on a baby's health.
