Vitamin D - The nutrient that powers your immune system

April 26, 2013

Vitamin D can lower your risk of just about every disease under the sun -- so many conditions that it almost seems like an impossibly wild exaggeration.

Cancer? Vitamin D can tame just about any tumor.

Flu? Who needs a vaccine when you have vitamin D!

Diabetes? Vitamin D will help keep your blood sugar levels right where they need to be.

Heart disease? Once again, it's D to the rescue.

Death? Yep... even the Grim Reaper himself is no match for the sunshine vitamin -- because D can literally help you to live longer.

(It's true, as I explained last year, low levels of D can literally kill you.)

Now, new research shows exactly why vitamin D is such a terrific disease-beater, and that's because it enhances the genes your immune system relies on to fight illness.

In a series of double-blind experiments, researchers gave eight young men and women with low D levels supplements of either 400 IUs a day or 2,000 IUs a day.

The ones who received the lower dose remained low in D. The ones who got the higher dose, on the other hand, moved up into the "sufficient" category.

That's still short of the ideal, but it's a good start -- and tests found that this boost in D changed the activity of 291 genes. Of those 291, 160 are related to the immune system and how it fights disease -- specifically cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and infectious illnesses such as colds and flu.

In other words, the study backs just about all of the immune-boosting benefits of D I've been telling you about for years now.

So don't wait another day. If you're not taking a D supplement, add one to your regimen ASAP (and 2,000 IUs a day is the absolute minimum).

And to really give your body a boost, throw the sunscreen away and step outside -- you can get most of what you need from pure sun exposure alone.

Sometimes, the best things in life really are free.

Lighting up your life,

Low levels of vitamin D can be deadly
August 12, 2012

The common nutritional deficiency with an uncommon death risk

Low in vitamin D? Then there’s another D you need to worry about: the “Big D,” as in DEATH.

Seniors with low levels of the sunshine vitamin are 30 percent more likely to die than those who have just the right amount, according to a new study, and the risks don’t end there.

D can also boost the risk of frailty. Frailty by itself doubles the risk of death, according to the study of 4,300 older folks. But frailty AND low D? That’s the ultimate double whammy — and it TRIPLES the risk of death.

That’s death from all causes, by the way. Logically, that means the right levels of D protect against death from all causes.

Quite a trick, and normally one I’d dismiss out of hand.

But if there’s any nutrient that can pull it off, it’s vitamin D. This nutrient — actually a hormone — is essential to just about every part of the body and can protect against nearly every major disease.

Cancer, heart disease, brain disorders — you name it, you’ll find a role for D… so it’s only natural that low levels of it will increase the risk of problems in every department as well as the risk of death from all causes.

That’s bad news for most people, since most people are missing out — a real shame since you can get plenty of D for free and with very little effort. Just open the door and step outside, because your body makes this stuff from sunlight.

So get back outside and get some D (and skip the sunscreen — those chemical creams can CAUSE the cancers they claim to prevent). And to really cover your bases, get a D supplement. They’re cheap and easy to find.

It’s either that, or make sure your will’s been updated.
