Researchers have found the first gene mutation that protects against Alzheimer's disease, a finding that supports a now-controversial theory about the cause of the disease and that could eventually lead to the development of new drugs to treat the disorder. The gene mutation also protects against normal dementia of aging, suggesting that the two diseases have mechanisms in common.

SA docs 'helping people die'
South Africa should legalise euthanasia as many doctors are already secretly helping elderly patients to die, Western Cape University Prof Sean Davison said on Thursday.
"Many doctors have said to me privately that they've helped people to die... at their request. It's the choice of the doctor [though]... and they have to do it behind the scenes illegally," he said.
With no choice whether to die or not, critically ill patients had to rely on the graciousness of their doctor.
"If you don't have a law change, you might be playing Lotto with your doctor."
Davison was addressing the Cape Town Press Club in Newlands.
He returned to South Africa in May after serving a five-month detention in New Zealand for helping his cancer-stricken mother end her life.
She had tried going on a hunger strike, but when that failed he gave her a lethal dose of morphine.
Davison pleaded guilty to assisted suicide in the Dunedin High Court last year. He was originally charged with attempted murder and was arrested in September 2010.

Study Finds that Carbs Prevent Energy Use

A few days ago, England's Euro 2012 football team lost a quarter-final match to Italy on penalties. This scenario has happened so regularly that one might call it the 'England finish'.
It has also happened so regularly that it hasn't been difficult to see a pattern emerging for some years: England just run out of energy; they aren't able to sustain 90 minutes of football.
The question is: Why? And the answer, which I have been convinced of for some years, was their rubbish carb-based diet. I am no lover of football, so have never watched a game, but commentaries on news bulletins spell out the form. To précis it, the England team always seem to start the game full of bounce, have most of the possession and often take the lead, then it all goes wrong. At half time they fill up on Jaffa cakes - and are so rubbish during the second half that they lose. But this, is exactly what I would expect.
Carbs not only result in reactive hypoglycaemia (you run out of blood glucose), they also raise serotonin, a hormone that makes you sleepy and slows you down. This is why people are advised to have a carb meal before going to bed. But both of these conditions are the last thing you should eat if you have to work - or play football.

Pregnancy is the biggest killer of teenage girls worldwide
Every year one million teenage girls die or suffer serious injury, infection or disease due to pregnancy or childbirth, according to our new report launched today. That's why we need world leaders to act at a crucial Family Planning Summit on 11 July.
Wednesday 27 June 2012
Our report, Every Woman's Right: How Family Planning Saves Lives, highlights the fact that girls under 15 are five times more likely to die in pregnancy than women in their 20s. Babies born to younger mums are also at far greater risk and around one million babies born to adolescent girls die every year - babies are 60% more likely to die if their mother is under 18.

Multiple Sclerosis Is Now Being Cured By Surgery
An Italian doctor has been getting dramatic results with a new type of treatment for Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, which affects up to 2.5 million people worldwide. In an initial study, Dr. Paolo Zamboni took 65 patients with relapsing-remitting MS, performed a simple operation to unblock restricted blood flow out of the brain - and two years after the surgery, 73% of the patients had no symptoms. Dr. Zamboni's thinking could turn the current understanding of MS on its head, and offer many sufferers a complete cure.

Groundbreaking Research Shows How Nanoparticles Are Causing Autoimmune Diseases
New groundbreaking research by scientists at Trinity College Dublin has found that exposure to nanoparticles, commonly used in sunscreen, cosmetics and other personal care products can have a serious impact on health, linking it to rheumatoid arthritis and the development of other serious autoimmune diseases.

The findings that have been recently published in the international journal 'Nanomedicine' have health and safety implications for the manufacture, use and ultimate disposal of nanotechnology products and materials.

The truth about the growing trend of cesareans
Sunday, June 10, 2012
by: Victoria Moore
(NaturalNews) The United States Department of Health and Human Services is reporting that Cesareans are on the rise up 53 percent since 1996. The C-Section rate was listed as 21 percent in 1996 and a climbed to 32.8 percent in 2010. According to the World Health Organization the suggested rate of C-section should not exceed 15 percent. Cesareans can be beneficial in situations where complications arise. However, the problem is that these procedures are often used inappropriately on healthy women with little or no complications.
C-sections can result in problems in the mother such as infections, loss of blood, placenta problems, complications in future pregnancies, ongoing pelvic pain, uterine rupture and bowel blockage. Babies can experience breathing problems, difficulty breastfeeding, childhood onset diabetes and asthma.

Still Think Margarine is Healthy? This How Margarine is Made
Have you ever wondered how margarine is made?
Many people probably know it is made by a process called hydrogenation. But few are aware of the details of what goes on during hydrogenation.
Here is a step-by-step description of the nine-step industrial hydrogenation process used in the making of margarine.
Step 1: Oils are heated until they turn rancid
Margarine makers start with cheap second-grade vegetable oils from corn/maize, soy-beans, sunflower seeds, cotton-seed, safflower seeds and canola/rapeseed.

Top 10 Health Benefits of Ginger
August 1, 2011
Ginger is a perennial plant, distinguished by the white and yellowish-greenish flowers it produces, as well as its thick and long twisting rhizoid (stem). The ginger plant is known to have originated in China, however it has since then been cultivated in many other countries, including: India, South West Asia, West Africa and the Caribbean. The plant is famous for its concentrated, spicy aroma, which can be attributed to the fact that it is composed of up to 3% natural essential oils.
The rhizoid is the part of the plant which is generally sold and used today. It has been made widely available for eating and for the use of flavoring foods. It is also ground up and processed into all sorts of powders, tinctures, crystals, tonics and flavorings and then marketed in health food stores.

Onion juice triples testosterone levels
Think of a dirt-cheap vegetable you can buy at every greengrocers and supermarket. Put it in a juicer, give the juice to rats for three weeks, and watch their testosterone level rise by 314 percent. According to research done at Tabriz University in Iran, fresh onion juice raises testosterone levels as much as substances like nolvadex or clomid.
More Research Shows that Bacteria are Beneficial, Not Harmful

Over many, many years, bacteria has been scrutinized and persecuted for causing the development of thousands of diseases and ailments in people, but what do we actually know about these microbes that seem to cover everything at all times? Recent research shows that we actually don’t know a whole lot about when we look at the leaps and bounds we took to disinfect and cleanse nearly everything we own. In a research project entitled the Human Microbiome Project (much akin to the Human Genome Project of great relevance), researchers show that bacteria and microbial bodies are actually much more beneficial than they will ever be detrimental. Not only do bacteria keep people alive and healthful by helping to strengthen the immune system, but they also explain in a broad sense why people are so different when it comes to vaccinations and diseases.

Straight women are much more likely to get themselves knocked up than gay women. So, in terms of evolution, they would seem to have a better chance of passing on their genes, while at the same time it would seem that the genes that make women gay would quickly vanish from the gene pool. This raises the question, why are there gay women?

ARVs give woman abnormally large breasts
2012-06-14 17:34
Johannesburg - An HIV-positive woman developed abnormally large and stretched breasts due to the side effects of her antiretroviral (ARV) medication, according to a report in the Sowetan on Thursday.
The condition, known as lipodystrophy, was recognised through changes in fat reduction or redistribution, often in one area, leading to abnormal body shape transformations.
"In 2008, my breasts started growing rapidly and got heavy, making life difficult for me," the 29-year-old woman told the newspaper.

United States cancer survivors face new test in long-term care
CHICAGO | Tue Jun 5, 2012 6:00pm EDT
(Reuters) - Mario Alberico got his education in oncology the hard way. He has lived with cancer and the long-term effects of his treatment for most of his life.At 51, Alberico has finally assembled a team of doctors near his home in suburban Chicago to manage his care. Before that, he saw one doctor after another who failed to recognize serious health problems that stemmed from radiation and chemotherapy drugs used to treat his bone cancer decades earlier.
During his senior year of high school, Alberico, the seventh of nine children supported by his widowed mother, got radiation and rotated through 4 different chemotherapy drugs at high doses that eradicated the cancer. Each one of those drugs can have grave long-term effects.

7 things women do that drive men mad
Annoying female habit 1: Making an anniversary out of everything
What is it with women turning the nice little things in life into a grand gift-exchanging, champagne-popping ceremony? We return home from a normal day at work to be met with a candle-lit dinner and an expensive looking gift but, quite frankly, it makes our heart stop. Have you done something wrong? Is it your birthday? My birthday? Oh silly me, it’s the anniversary of the first time we looked at each other. Please refrain from doing this, ladies. We have a hard enough time getting event dates right without being shouted at for not buying the dog a card to celebrate the anniversary of his first vaccination.

5 Types of women men can't stand
We all know what women don't like in men, but do we have even the slightest idea about what type of women put off men? Here is the lowdown on the personality types men don't like at all.
Cribber:
Women who crib, talk negatively and belittle people are a great turn-off. Sure we all have our bags full of complaints, but it is one thing to complain once in a while, and it's something else to crib big time 24x7 about every issue or every person one comes across. Men can't understand why a woman has to crib and bitch all the time. Either you do something about the issue or stop complaining - it's as simple as that.

Rosemary Oil Improves Your Brain Power and Memory
There may be another way to improve your memory and cognition. According to a new British study, all you have to do is take a sniff of a specific essential oil. The best news is that it's not hard to find.

The new study was designed to show whether breathing in something called 1,8-cineole--a chemical compound found in rosemary oil--would have an effect on mental abilities. The researchers suspected that it might boost mental abilities because past research has shown that 1,8-cineole might slow the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that’s essential for both memory and many other mental processes including recognizing sequences and performing quick mathematical tasks.

The FTC: Actually, Pomegranates May Not Treat Heart Disease, Cancer, and Erectile Dysfunction

Even with the best research money could buy, a judge ruled this week that POM had deceptively promoted its products unproven health benefits.
I've been following the legal battles between the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the makers of POM juice and other pomegranate juice products with avid interest, mainly because they deal with the credibility of sponsored scientific research.
This week, an administrative law judge ruled that POM violated federal law when it deceptively advertised its products as able to "treat, prevent, or reduce the risk of heart disease, prostate cancer, and erectile dysfunction."

University of Zurich researchers found that people who take the pills are 86 percent more likely to have a heart attack than those who do not, after studying data on 24,000 German men and women aged 35 to 64, over 11 years.
The risk more than doubled for people taking only calcium supplements, the researchers said.

6 Reasons People Gain Weight In The Summer
When it comes to losing or maintaining your weight, we know it is not a cakewalk, but unknowingly there can be many reasons contributing to sabotaging your healthy intentions, even in the summer.
There are many cues of gaining weight, right from the pill you're popping on regular basis, to the lightning in a restaurant to replacing fats with carbs. Do these habits sound familiar? Browse on to know about 6 surprising reasons why you gaining weight this summer season.
1. For days, you tend to give up on fats completely, only to replace them with carbs. In order to lower the amount of fat we eat, we tend to replace fatty foods with carb varieties, such as white breads, rice and white pastas. Simple carbs tend to stimulate your body to produce insulin, which can further lead to weight gain. The best solution is to stick to healthy carbs and fats. Go for grains, healthy fruits and vegetables for healthy carbs, and avocado, nuts and fish for monosaturated fats.

Chemists Merge Experimentation With Theory In Understanding Of Water Molecule
Water is the most abundant and one of the most frequently studied substances on Earth, yet its geometry at the molecular level – the simple two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, and how they interact with other molecules, including other water – has remained somewhat of a mystery to chemists.
Most understanding at that level is theoretical, requiring the use of supercomputers to make innumerable calculations over periods of weeks to make educated guesses as to the arrangements and structure of water clusters before they form into liquid water or ice.
But a new study, using experimentation with a highly advanced spectrometer for molecular rotational spectroscopy, has removed some of the mystery and validates some very complex theory involving the way water molecules bond. It is published in the May 18 issue of the journal Science.

Study Finds That Coffee Drinkers Have Lower Risk Of Death
Older adults who drank coffee - caffeinated or decaffeinated - had a lower risk of death overall than others who did not drink coffee, according a study by researchers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and AARP.

Coffee drinkers were less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections, although the association was not seen for cancer. These results from a large study of older adults were observed after adjustment for the effects of other risk factors on mortality, such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Researchers caution, however, that they can't be sure whether these associations mean that drinking coffee actually makes people live longer. The results of the study were published in the May 17, 2012 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Fascinating documentary exposes cancer industry's death agenda: Cut Poison Burn
Monday, May 21, 2012 by: Ethan A. Huff, staff writer
(NaturalNews) As free as many Americans might think they are, there are certain glaring aspects of American life for which individuals are not free to make their own choices, and cancer treatment is one of them. In the sobering documentary Cut Poison Burn, filmmaker Wayne Chesler brings to light the sinister nature of the multi-billion dollar cancer industry, its suppression of any real pursuit of a cure, and its stranglehold on medicine that restricts individuals from choosing their own personalized, alternative forms of treatment.
The documentary follows the journey of the Navarro family, whose young son Thomas, then four years old, was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a highly-malignant form of brain cancer that typically afflicts children. Rather than undergo conventional chemotherapy and radiation, the Navarros instead wanted to pursue an alternative route, which in their case was Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski's non-toxic antineoplaston treatment, which has been shown to be particularly effective at treating brain cancers.

Fertility Clinic Conception Is a Rare Event - Study Shows
Fox News Health
Published October 26, 2010 | Reuters
Fewer than eight percent of all tries at making a baby in a lab dish will succeed, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
A review of all their efforts to unite egg and sperm at their fertility clinic showed just 7.5 percent of tries resulted in an embryo that could then be implanted in a woman's womb, a team led by Michael John Tucker at Shady Grove Fertility Center in Maryland said.
"It should surprise no one that the vast majority of sperm and eggs never get together to even begin the fertilization process," Dr. Robert Rebar, executive director of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, said in a statement.

The Four SOCIAL STYLES
Nearly 50 years of research has revealed that people operate with four distinct ways of interaction, or SOCIAL STYLES: Analytical, Amiable, Driving and Expressive.
| Analytical Style people value facts above all, and may appear uncommunicative, cool and independent. They have a strong time discipline coupled with a slow pace to action. They value accuracy, competency and logic over opinions, often avoiding risk in favor of cautious, deliberate decisions. Analyticals are usually cooperative, providing they have some freedom to organize their own efforts. Power often arises suspicion in Analyticals, but if they come to see it as necessary for achieving goals and objectives, they may seek power themselves. In relationships, Analyticals are initially more careful and reserved, but once trust is earned they can become dedicated and loyal. "More about the Analytical Style." |
